At least 13 individuals perish and ninety-eight hurt in train crash in Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and handling of the country's flagship government projects.

The accident happened on the Interoceanic Train, a route constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” stated the national leader.

The official announced that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The leader added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the immediate past president, whose time in office finished the year before. This rail line was a hallmark of his leadership's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The construction of both railway systems was managed by the armed forces, marking a dramatic growth of its role in public projects. They were completed at an accelerated speed, defying expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had also raised significant questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an previous accident this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a key rival party demanded an immediate halt in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This pause was proposed until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "demands swift accountability."

In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and running of these national initiatives.
