Donald Trump along with Japan's New Prime Minister Share Praise and Commit to Reinforce ‘Extraordinary’ Relationship

During a recent visit to Tokyo, former American leader Trump and the Japanese recently elected Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi shared friendly praise and vowed to enhance the currently strong two-way ties.

Key Points from the Meeting

Trump commended Prime Minister Takaichi as a ‘exceptional’ leader and congratulated her on becoming the nation's inaugural woman premier. In their talks at the capital's Akasaka Palace, the former president voiced confidence that she would prove to be one of the ‘great prime ministers’ of Japan.

Takaichi, identified as a protégée of late Prime Minister Abe, praised his initiatives to address international conflicts and reportedly vowed to nominate him for the prestigious award.

Economic and Defense Deals

Both governments announced a list of joint initiatives in areas such as energy, AI, and rare earths. Japan-based firms are considering funding of up to $400bn in the United States.

Additionally, Tokyo had earlier committed $550bn in long-term US investments, financing, and guarantees as part of an arrangement to secure relief from the former president's import duties.

These moves are viewed as possibly reducing any upcoming demands from Trump for Tokyo to increase its defense spending. The prime minister addressed this by promising to accelerate plans to raise defense spending to two percent of gross domestic product.

The meeting highlights the continuing significance of the American-Japanese alliance and sets the stage for further collaboration on economic, defense, and diplomatic areas.
