Edwards along with Gary O'Neil are two of the initial candidates under consideration to replace the former manager as manager of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Pereira was sacked on the weekend after the team's 10-match without a victory start to the top-flight campaign.
Furthermore Edwards and O'Neil - both of who have previous links to the team - are part of the options to be evaluated by the Wolves ownership.
The manager is presently at another club, which would pose a potential obstacle to his hiring at Molineux.
However the ex- Luton Town head coach - who made over a century of appearances for Wolves during his playing career - is considered a leading candidate for the vacancy.
The 42-year-old is said to have backing from the Wolves board as they begin the process of hiring a new manager.
Gary O'Neil is also appearing as a surprise candidate, although he would be a shock appointment given he was sacked by the club in December last year.
The former West Ham United midfielder is out of work which means the club would not be required to provide any buyout fee.
