Individuals Coming Off Anti-Obesity Injections Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study indicates that individuals who come off new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a major medical journal shows that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People using such drugs should be cognizant of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a reversion to starting mass within about a year and a half.

Weighing Approaches

The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Scientists note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually have a slower weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Experts believe the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the heightened weight return.

These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."

A Chronic Disease?

The NHS suggest the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often life-long.

This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "highlight the chronic character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Accounts

Users who have discontinued the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced a switch that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled an individual.

This challenge is compounded if patients have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Growing Adoption

Survey data indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is more common among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

In conclusion, researchers emphasize that while these medications are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits relies on integrated behavioural changes.
