Our Top Record of the Year: Rosalía's Lux Takes the Number One Spot.

At first glance, this album could seem more like an arduous scholarly challenge rather than a new pop project from an artist whose last hit featured an international pop icon. Divided across four different sections and sung in thirteen languages, this is a breathtaking classical-tinged album exploring feminine mystery, religious transcendence, and physical change, frequently by way of the lens of different saintly figures. The dissolution of a love affair—a topic handled with raw honesty on another major 2025 album—soars skyward on this record, buoyed by the constant sound of a full orchestra and input from an award-winning songwriter among a vast list of collaborators. The pure ambition by itself makes the efforts of other artists seem rather laughable.

Rising Above Academic Pretense

That Lux manages to escape overly academic posturing feels nearly a miracle, and complete credit belonging to the artist. Although this is not her first album to alchemize the past with the present, its scale feel much greater on Lux, with the tightrope walk far more dramatic. The element that truly elevates her fourth release, outside of its complex tunes, dense arrangements, and inherent theatricality, proves to be an essential sense of playfulness. Much like the legendary Björk during her peak, you find a wondrous quality to Rosalía's singing that pulls you into its whirlwind. Even when she is breaking hearts apart, you still desire to stay alongside her through the journey.

A Prime Moment of Exuberance

This exuberant spirit comes forth clearly during the stunning Italian song inspired by a saint. It bathes in a sorrowful melancholy for more than four minutes. Then, all the music falls silent, and we hear a gleeful laugh followed by a declaration before a hilariously exaggerated orchestral crescendo thuds in with cartoonish force. The song immediately shifts to the wild track driven by galloping orchestration, a powerful choral group, and a cameo role from the artist herself.

"The charm with this album is that the listener rarely exactly understand—or even want to know—where you will go to next."

Nearly every track ends in a totally distinct point than how it began. A track explores the transient trappings of fame over a delicate orchestration before disintegrating in electronic cacophony. Another, a cut echoing her previous rhythmic style begins out moody and sinister, with menacing beats, before fluttering traditional handclaps and an angelic choir enter to smooth its jagged corners.

The Balance Between Experiment and Accessibility

A key balancing act of Lux is navigating the gap between radical experimentation and mainstream appeal. It is no coincidence that it has become her highest-charting work to break into the Top 5 of major charts: at its core a collection of truly undeniable hits. One track performed entirely in English builds on a refrain that seems to gather increasingly nagging hooks as it spirals upward. This feat is echoed by a different powerful ballad that expands and constricts, intertwining layered melodies like a complex tapestry.

  • A waltz-like number charms with its jaunty, theatrical drama and an anthemic chorus.
  • Lyrically, it shares the pop culture impact of contemporary breakup anthems, eviscerating an ex- lover described as an "emotional bully".
  • Across the album, the singing have a painted-on smile, like a fairy-tale figure hiding a knife: "Top prize in being a scoundrel / You have the podium of letdown."

An Opulent Feast for the Ears

Lux is popular music on a maximalist level, an ambitious grasp for capital-A artistry amid of looming artificial blankness. It rejects solipsism for glorious transcendence, creating a dramatic drama that masterfully controls its own built-in ridiculousness. It is a deep source of hidden gems that takes time to fully mine but never feels like a chore. While other big releases of 2025 felt like feasting on scraps, Lux offers a sumptuous banquet at which the characters at the table, some tipsy on holy wine, flit between conversations about historical figures, the profound sensation of heartbreaking sadness, and shared stories about hopeless partners. It is a contemporary musical from pop's truly restlessly inventive practitioner.
