The Hamilton Island Resort, one of the Iconic Tropical Getaway on the World Heritage Reef, Reportedly Set to be Acquired by American Private Equity Firm.
A major tropical holiday destination located on the Great Barrier Reef has entered into an agreement for sale to a American investment group for a sum said to be worth A$1.2 billion.
“It is an honor to continue the vision and dedication that the Oatley family has built in the heart of the iconic Great Barrier Reef,” stated a company executive.
The Reported Acquisition Agreement
The New York-headquartered, Blackstone – the owner of the casino-hotel chain Crown Resorts – confirmed it had signed an agreement to acquire the Hamilton Island resort from the Oatley family owners, subject to standard approvals from regulators.
The family released a statement saying they welcomed the new owners of an island that holds a “unique position in the hearts of countless Australians” and is referred to as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
The Island's Size and Amenities
Located almost 900km north of Brisbane and about 500km south of Cairns, Hamilton spans over 1,130 hectares across two islands.
Roughly 30% of the land is developed, including a significant array of facilities:
- Five hotels
- More than 20 restaurants and bars
- Twenty shops and retail spaces
- An championship 18-hole golf course on adjacent Dent Island
- A boat marina and a commercial airport
Hamilton Island is noted as a major job provider in the Whitsundays, supporting a sizable resident community and staff, as well as a wide network of local partners, suppliers, and local businesses.
Historical Context at The Island's History
The deceased billionaire Robert Oatley, a renowned sailor and winemaker, originally purchased the resort for A$200 million in the year 2003 after spotting the island from the deck a yacht while sailing through the Whitsunday passage.
Hamilton's development boom initially started in the 1980s. For decades prior that, it was characterized by galvanised iron huts and modest accommodations that housed domestic holidaymakers from inland areas and from the south.

The acquiring firm has ownership of hotels and luxury resorts in multiple nations, such as Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The Whitsunday region is the traditional lands and seas of the Ngaro Indigenous people. Its name comes from Captain James Cook, who navigated the HMS Endeavour through the island group on June 3, 1770, which was the Christian holiday of Whit Sunday.
