Whenever a significant awards ceremony nears, there’s always a clamor for the addition of new categories to honor overlooked contributions and fill the spirits of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.
A fellow writer made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. So would tabletop games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist for pushing forward because like all single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification for why my demand is the most urgent above others. The demand is this: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and it will always start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why film award organizations avoid this approach. Yet it remains an essential concession within the realm of gaming, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.
For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Leading game ceremonies currently feature genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these six categories successfully include numerous genres, and you can find room for most games within them.
This doesn't apply to puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Think about these recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Which classification works among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.
Recognition Challenges
There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games published annually lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.
- An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated in any category that year
- Another imaginative release missed out during that ceremony
- A beloved organization game was overlooked recently
- Limited numbers of brain-teasers managed to sneak into niche award types
Significance of Puzzle Games
These are often small games, however the design of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most engaged experiences globally maintaining this status for over a decade.
The legendary block-stacking game rivals popular creative games competing to become most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, while interacting with almost every other genre.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. You could fill a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.
And to reiterate, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers operate at the hard edge of video game design, creating some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Comparable to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay decades.
