They're Repeating across America What They Did with Christianity

The Trump phenomenon's most illuminating and defining instances – not its most significant, nor most brutal, nor most threatening, nor most senseless, but possibly its most revealing – came earlier this autumn. In the course of several weeks, the American president started showing the public his plans for an ornate dance hall double the dimensions than the White House and subsequently started solo dismantling the eastern section to erect it.

He has performed deeds 10,000 times as bad – the present calculation of deaths resulting from his reductions to foreign assistance stands at 600,000 and increasing, and this week research projected his fossil fuel policies would kill another 1.3 million. But nothing as definitional. No former leader would have risked – genuinely, no previous leader would have imagined – solo demolishing large sections of the presidential residence to build a Versailles-style party room, with the direct cooperation of some of America's wealthiest, the majority of whom have business with public institutions.

We moved from 'the humble will receive the Earth' toward 'the meek shall die from cholera'

As confusing as it is to watch the leader try to upend the established notion regarding democracy and exchange it with its direct contrary, there is one large group within America who should not find it completely novel. That encompasses people such as ourselves – among senior generations almost a majority – who were educated within mainstream Protestant traditions.

We have observed across decades while conservative evangelical congregations turned the Jesus we were raised with into exactly the opposite of who we understood him to be. Essentially, they converted a persona of affection into a symbol of hostility who endorses precisely the cruelties that he criticized in scripture; this change developed more slowly, through multiple decades rather than months, however it is still disconcerting via comparable methods, a disorienting gut punch for countless people.

A Damaging Christianity Gains Ground

Hence I shall explain the Savior from my upbringing, because theoretically Jesus is the center within Christian belief, and because the fastest-growing cadre of Americans may possess limited understanding regarding him since they are skeptics or uncertain individuals or religiously unaffiliated. I have no problem with any of these traditions, nor with any other faith; however I believe that contain precious wisdom of substantial value within Christian narrative.

It is emphatically absolutely not the narrative of a powerful ruler appearing; conversely, an infant arrives to homeless parents in an automotive shelter, who need to rapidly escape to a foreign land to escape covert authorities. The child matures in humble circumstances, an employed craftsman; his doctrine is about love for others, particularly for the poor – and not a sentimental love, but a concrete one, expressed by feeding and protecting. The Savior's reaction to hostility is to offer the other cheek – not as a demonstration of submissive tolerance, but as a way to instruct the assailant; his approach to wrongdoing is that if an individual takes your outer garment you should give them your pullover as well.

The evident and straightforward truth that the Jesus from scripture requests a type of extreme compassion centered on the poor is what has always made Christian religion something of a provocative belief system: engaging for the masses, but due to its natural unconventionality requiring to be controlled. In the 1950s it was controlled through watering down – Protestant Christianity was so widespread that it practically sanctified existing conditions.

A Struggle for the Finest of Us

So I have been heartened to observe the determined opposition regarding Trump emerge in this past year. It has been substantial consolation to assist in constructing the movement that has protested openly via continuous gatherings, and appears to have motivated citizens to turn out in numbers during minor elections. We will need to continue it, and with identical determination, displaying national flags throughout each rally and calls to the finest aspects within national heritage.

We will be questioned ... about how you treated the stranger? Did you accept these individuals and welcome him or refuse?

The nation is most protected, essentially, by relationship to the highest within national tradition, similar to Christianity is most protected through connection to what makes it unique and beautiful, specifically the model of the Savior. In neither case does it suggest feigning the most negative about the nation and Christianity never occurred; it signifies both meekness and belief, a mixture that serious American Christians should be comfortable with.
