UN Removes Sanctions on Syria's Leader Ahead of White House Visit
United Nations Security Council members gave the green light to a US resolution to lift sanctions on President Ahmed al-Sharaa of Syria ahead of his White House visit the following week.
He was appointed transitional president following his leadership in an insurgent campaign that drove out the previous leader in winter 2024, concluding 13 years of domestic strife.
The US representative UN ambassador Mike Waltz declared the global body transmitted "a strong political signal" that acknowledged Syria entered "a new era" following Assad's ouster.
Previously, he faced United Nations restrictions as the leader of the Muslim faction the HTS movement, which was formerly linked to the extremist organization. America delisted the group from its registry of international terrorist organizations during July.
Additional Sanctions Relief
The UN also removed sanctions on Syrian Interior Minister Minister Anas Khattab.
The nation's top diplomat applauded the lifting of the sanctions, stating online: "Syrian officials convey thanks to Washington and allied countries for assisting the Syrian nation and citizens."
Forthcoming Presidential Visit
Sharaa's White House visit on Monday occurs subsequent to President Trump said the Syrian leader demonstrated "substantial headway" towards bringing peace to the previously divided state.
Both presidents held discussions on their first occasion in May, while the American president was in Saudi Arabia while traveling through the Middle East.
Subsequent to that discussion, America's leader characterized him as a "resilient figure" with a "very strong past".
The HTS organization he led operated as the terrorist network's partner in Syria before he cut connections during 2016.
Previous US Visit
Monday's visit is not his initial visit to America during this period. In September, he made history as the initial Syrian president to present to the UN General Assembly in Manhattan for nearly six decades.
Throughout his presentation, he declared the nation was "reclaiming its rightful place across international circles" while showing support with the people of Gaza.
