Working Life of Earnings Not Enough for UK Labor Force to Enter Most Affluent 10%, Report Finds

Per fresh analysis, the median earner in the UK would require over five decades of salary to attain the net worth of the most affluent 10% in the country.

Expanding Financial Divide Over Time

This research reviewed net worth statistics including the 2020-22 timeframe and discovered that during the pre-financial crisis era, it would have required nearly four decades of average worker salary to reach the top 10th of the financial hierarchy.

A senior economist involved with the study stated: "Economic disparities in Britain are presently so substantial that a typical full-time employee saving all their earnings across their entire working life would remain unable to reach the top of the economic scale."

Quantifying the Economic Gap

The research discovered that the disparity between the wealth of the typical individual and a person belonging to the wealthiest decile was one million pounds in the mid-2000s, but had increased to £1.3m in real terms by 2020-22.

The analyst added: "These disparities are doubly concerning as wealth mobility in Britain is low – individuals who begin life wealthy tend to remain affluent, and the opposite holds true."

Relative Wealth Inequality

Although the economic divide widening in specific figures, the share of total wealth in the UK owned by the richest households – termed "proportional economic disparity" – has been "largely unchanged since the 1980s era," per the analysis.

Throughout these years, overall assets in the UK surged from thrice the annual GDP, to almost 7.5 times.

Contributors of Financial Divide

Referred to as "automatic" increases, by means of growing real estate costs and adjustments to retirement fund assessments, were the key contributors of the widening wealth gap from 2010 onward, as stated in the study.

These increases generally flowed to elderly homeowners, the research shows – worsening the intergenerational wealth divide.

Intergenerational Economic Gaps

The median economic difference between individuals aged 30-34 and sixty-somethings more than doubled in actual value, from £135k in 2006-08, to 310 thousand pounds.

Area-Based Disparities

There were also pronounced area-based disparities, with the typical amount of net worth in recent years amounting to 290 thousand pounds in the southeastern region, where property prices have typically increased quickly, as opposed to £110,000 in the north-east.

Pandemic Period Effects

Amid the health crisis, when countless laborers were covered under the government-supported job retention program, and pandemic lockdowns limited opportunities for spending, the statistics indicate many households were able to save, growing their net worth.

More affluent homes fared much better, nevertheless. "The average household in the poorest fifth saw their liquid savings grow by only eighty pounds throughout the health crisis (2019-20 to 2021-22), approximately equivalent to the pre-crisis period. In contrast, the average household in the wealthiest fifth saw their liquid savings increase by £4,200," the report finds.
